Hear from... a Civil Engineer

 ...an Environmental Engineer

Name: Liz Darley
Studied: Civil Engineering at Cambridge University 1998-2002
Chartered Engineering 2006. Chartered Environmentalist 2008.
Works for: Director of Kingston Community Energy / Retrofit Project Manager / Director of Grow South

I worked for civil engineering firm Black and Veatch for 5 years, working predominantly on flood defence and clean water supply projects. But I wanted to do more. I decided to move out of that sector to work for Bioregional running their environmental consultancy for 5 years working on projects such as the London 2012 media centre and Masdar sustainable city in Abu Dhabi. This type of work has a place in developing the cause of environmental change and development but at times I felt that we were being used as green wash.

I then took a year sabbatical to engage with an HIV charity project that found me cycling from the UK to Thailand. On my return I took on a project manager role in the whole-house retrofit of a 1940’s terrace property and become more engaged in local grassroots activism. Subsequently, I founded the Kingston Community Energy project and Grow South.
