Public health - diversify your options

Public health courses in Australia will equip you with useful skills and provide opportunities for a wide range of careers.

Public health is a diverse and exciting field. Postgraduate studies in public health can equip you with an understanding of important public health issues within Australia and the international context, and provide you with opportunities for work across a broad range of health fields.

The burden of illness associated with chronic disease is escalating globally and these issues require urgent public health responses. In a public health course, disease patterns across communities with a focus on epidemiology, infectious diseases and inequities across populations will be examined. You will consider public health policy and ways to promote the health and well-being of rural, regional and remote populations, indigenous populations and vulnerable communities. You will develop specific skills to equip you for work as a public health practitioner including research skills, biostatistics and programme development and evaluation.

Potential areas of specialisations include: lifestyle medicine; complementary medicine, Indigenous health and wellbeing; rural, regional and remote health; and public health and health promotion. Australia has universities that excel in teaching and research that host students from many backgrounds. With its diverse geography and population, including our Indigenous population, it is an ideal place to pursue studies in public health.
