Courtney Windju - “Idaho Roots (pun intended)”

 Courtney Windju

Courtney left the USA to study at the University of Otago in New Zealand. When she’s not studying she likes exploring, baking and meeting new people. Courtney graduated from the University of San Diego in 2016.

This morning I went to the New World grocery store before sunrise (typical here…sun doesn’t rise until around 8 am) to pick up some groceries. Needless to say, I came across these bad boys.

potatoes

“…. I came across these bad boys.”

I have been meaning to purchase potatoes merely because they are such a versatile food (not to mention how goooood they are). I must add that the 5kg bag was $5.99 and the 10kg bag was $6.99 - so what did the American capitalist consumer do? I think you know the answer to that question. Regardless of what country I am currently in and my consumer activity, picking up this bag of potatoes reminded me of home and how thankful I am to be from such a wonderful place.

I would say that Sandpoint is more comparable to Dunedin and New Zealand in general than San Diego. I really do love each place for different reasons, however. Sandpoint has taught me how to appreciate small towns, all seasons, friendly people and knowing a little too much about everyone’s lives. San Diego has brought out an adventurous spirit in me that was dormant when I took everything for granted in Sandpoint. San Diego is also very beautiful and you just can’t beat the weather and sunsets there…or the acai bowls.

“San Diego is also very beautiful ...”

New Zealand, on the other hand, so far is like nothing I have ever seen before. I’d say the country itself is the 8th wonder of the world. Everyday I look forward to new experiences. Oh - side note- you have not termed the word “adventure” correctly until you come to NZ, seriously.
